Johann Friedrich Gmelin (1748-1804) taught medicine, botany, and natural
history at Tubingen, and later taught medicine at Gottingen. A
well-traveled scientist, he published on chemistry, botany, geology, and
pharmacology. He continued Linne's Systema Naturae in edition 13 (1788-at
least 1791) after Linne's death. His edition has never been well-received.
It generated many synonyms and incorrectly synonymized valid species.
