My magic solution is 3 to 4 parts lighter fluid to 1 part unscented baby oil.
Thins the oil so it is absorbed into the shell not on it, and after a short
while the lighter fluid evaporates. Leaves a nice fresh looking shell with no
tacky or sticky covering. Have to keep the solution covered or the lighter
fluid will evaporate and leave just the oil.

Been using this for over 20 years with no problem. Did find that shells I
used it on 20 years ago needed to be freshened up a bit.
