EXCHANGE PROGRAM DEADLINES:

If you are interested in participating in a UGA exchange
program during the Spring 2005 semester, applications are
due to the Office of International Education on September
15, 2004.

Exchange programs are an ideal option for students who wish
to spend a semester or academic year abroad and immerse
themselves in student culture in another country.  The
University of Georgia exchange partnerships enable UGA
students to enroll as visiting students at a partner
university and earn transfer credit for their academic work.

Exchanges also represent one of the most affordable ways to
spend a semester abroad.  UGA participants pay in-state
tuition and fees to the Office of International Education
and pay for housing and meals on site. In addition, HOPE,
other scholarships and other financial aid can
usually be applied to the cost of exchange programs.

THE 20th ANNUAL UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA STUDY, WORK, & TRAVEL
ABROAD FAIR

The Study Abroad Fair is coming! Students can meet face to
face with 100 representatives of Study Abroad Programs from
around the world.

Date: Wednesday, October 6, 2004
Time: 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Place: Tate Student Center, Georgia Hall

STUDY ABROAD DIRECTOR OF THE YEAR AWARD:

The Office of International Education is accepting
nominations for the 2004 Study Abroad Director of the Year
Award.  This award is granted annually to a study abroad
program director on the UGA campus who has provided
exceptional leadership to a study abroad program.  Awards
will be presented at a special reception in September.  If
you would like to nominate your UGA study abroad program
director, please send a letter of nomination with the
following information to the Julie Escobedo
([log in to unmask]) at Office of International Education by
Friday, September 17, 2004.

ATTENTION FALL 2004 STUDY ABROAD STUDENTS:

Let your voice be heard while oversees!!! Here are some
great ways to make your vote count in the upcoming elections.

1. http://www.overseasvote2004.com
If you have internet access and a printer, this is by far
the least confusing, quickest way to fill in the request
forms for an absentee ballot.

2. Political Parties Abroad
Both Democrats Abroad (http://www.democratsabroad.org) and
RepublicansAbroad (http://www.republicansabroad.org) can
provide the paperwork andassistance in filling in the
forms.  They each register voters regardless of party
affiliation.

3. The Federal Voter Assistance Program
http://www.fvap.gov
The FVAP site provides all the necessary forms for download
along with state by state instructions.
The FVAP also maintains toll-free numbers in many countries
which connect to their office in Virginia.

You may be asking, “Where can I send my ballot if I do not
have a fixed address?”  Here’s the answer, send it to either
the International Students’ Office to your host university
or to your study abroad program office overseas.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:

STARS WORK STIPENDS:

The Office of International Education is still looking for
ONE more STARS student. STARS (Students Abroad with Regents
Support) Work Stipends help support UGA students planning to
study abroad in Spring 2005, Summer 2005 and the 2005-06
academic year.

--EXTENDED APPLICATION DEADLINE:  September 13, 2004
--STARS Award:  Work 71 hours for the Office of
International Education during the fall 2004 semester and
earn $500 toward the cost of your study abroad program
--Eligibility:  Any student who is planning to study abroad
in Spring 2005, Summer 2005 or the 2005-2006 academic year
can apply for the STARS work stipend
--TO APPLY:  Download the STARS application from the OIE
website at http://www.uga.edu/oie/sagensch.htm and submit to
the Office of International Education.  Additional study
abroad scholarship information is also available on-line.

ELIZABETH SUZANNE SCHAEFER STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIP

The Office of International Education is pleased to announce
the application deadline for the Elizabeth Suzanne Schaefer
Scholarship in support of UGA students who will study abroad
in Spring 2005 or Summer 2005.

--Application Deadline:  October 15, 2004
--Award:  $500 scholarships provided through support of the
Schaefer-Sammons family and the UGA Foundation.
--Eligibilty:  UGA undergraduates attending a UGA study
abroad or exchange program or an external study abroad (not
sponsored by UGA).  3.0 minimum GPA required.  Preference
will be given for academic merit, applicants from groups
that are under-represented in study abroad (i.e. students of
color, first generation college students, students from
rural Georgia, math/science majors), participation in
programs with language/cultural immersion component or
located in a under-represented geographic regions (i.e.
outside of Western Europe).
--TO APPLY:  Download an Office of International Education
scholarship application from the OIE website at
http://www.uga.edu/oie/sagensch.htm and sumbit complete
application to the Office of International Education.
Additional study abroad scholarships are also available
using this application form.

GILMAN STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIP (for Pell Grant Recipients):

--Application Deadline: September 22, 2004
--Award: up to $5,000.  Award amounts will vary depending on
the length of study and student need with the average award
being $4,000.
--Eligibility:  Candidates must be U.S. citizens and
undergraduates who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding
at 2-year or 4-year undergraduate colleges or universities
and are planning to study abroad this Spring.  Gilman Award
recipients are chosen by a competitive selection process and
requires students to develop a follow-up service project at
home campus/community after the study abroad program.

University of Georgia) offer automatic discounts to UGA
participants:
--IES: $1500 discount on all programs (programs in a wide
variety of academic fields offered in Europe, Latin America
and Australia)
--DiS: $1500 discount (programs in International Business
and Economics, Marine Biology, Molecular Biology and
Genetics, Architecture, Education, and Humanities and
Sciences, located in Copenhagen, Denmark)
--Syracuse University: $1,000 (summer programs in a wide
variety of academic fields in Europe, Latin America, and
Asia)
