While living in China I shopped the seafood markets, especially the large one in Shanghai "Tongchuan Lu Fish Market in Putuo Qu".
There I could not afford the Geoducks and related species either.  
When a culture attributes a high phallic value to something it realy ups the price.

The large cold water scallops were quite pricy, but I did buy two each of 2 species.
