> O.K., using all the Genus, subgenus etc., how many are there? John

John,

I think James answer (about 103) was pretty good. There are over 100
species of Haliotis. G. Poppe's web site lists about 111, counting
subspecies, Eisenberg says over 100, and all web references I could find
said over 100. So depending upon how many subspecies you consider valid,
the species number is from the low 90s (lots of subspecies) to the 110 area
(most subspecies counted as full species).

Tom Eichhorst in New Mexico, USA (where most of the haliotis is the
mis-spelled kind Art accused me of having)
