Subject: mollusca Appeal for type figures

Dear Colleagues,

Work on the Type Figures volume of the Catalogue and Bibliography of the
Shell-bearing Mollusca of Japan is proceeding well, and we will now be able
to figure in colour the types of at least 2500 species described or
recorded from Japan. Like the other Elle Scientific Publications works,
this is a non-profit project for the benefit of science.
In an effort to push the number of species figured even higher, we would
now like to appeal for pictures of the types of species we have hitherto
been unable to re-photograph ourselves. The institutions outside Japan
whose type collections we have already fully reviewed are :

(USA) ANSP; USNM; AMNH
(Europe) BMNH

Photographs of Japanese types from institutions other than these will be
most welcome, and will of course be fully acknowledged.
The criteria for inclusion are :
- the type locality of the species should be Japan
- the specimen should be the name-bearing type (holotype, syntype,
lectotype or neotype; not paratype or paralectotype)
- the species should fall into the marine shell-bearing categories
(Polyplacophora; Gastropoda excluding Nudibranchia; Bivalvia; Scaphopoda)
- the species should be marine in ecology (for families excluded, see Higo,
Callomon & Goto 1999)

The images can be colour or monochrome, positive or negative, mounted or
strip film, 35 mm or other format; scans of images in any format are also
acceptable (the format used for the book is .TIFF in CMYK mode, for
Macintosh, but most other formats can be converted). The data to be
presented with the finished image is : size (largest dimension in any
plane), museum name and museum registration number. The latter two can be
researched separately by ourselves if they are not available.
The closure date for inclusion is 1st August, 2000.
