There is a paper by Daniel Geiger in press in The Nautilus (vol 112, issue
1, May 1998) about the nomenclature of abalones. Daniel, who is currently
working toward his PhD degree at UCLA and the Los Angeles County Museum of
Natural History, is quickly becoming the specialist in abalone systematics.
He has several other papers on abalone in press or in preparation,
including a taxonomic revision of the family. His 32-page paper in The
Nautilus deals mainly with the validity of the many names applied to
different species of abalone, and offers many black-and-white illustrations
of the rarer, seldom-illustrated species. Although his paper will not be a
substitute for an abalone book, it will answer many questions about abalone
systematics and nomenclatural problems and, in association with his other
works, may provide the baseline information for a future book.
