Dear Conchlers:

While there has been much discussion here of Byne's Disease,

I don't recall any tips on that other scourge of the shell cabinet,

the Museum Beetle larva. You know, those hairy, half centimeter long

worms that like to eat the periostraca off bivalves and gastropods

and the girdles off of chitons, and any internal visceral matter that

you may have missed when cleaning your shells. They really love insect

collections most of all. Naphthalene cakes or moth balls would probably

keep them at bay, but the fumes from these products keep most people

away too. Is there any way to get rid of these pests without fogging the

entire house?

Yours, Andrew V.
