While I don't recall that article it brings to mind a
wonderfully horrible B movie entitled "Slugs" (or
something like that) in which toxic-waste-mutated
slugs overrun a small town and attack and devour its
residents.

I found this film classic recently at a local chain
video store so it is likely that other US mollusk
enthusiasts can rent a copy of this bit of trash to
enjoy on their own.
