Dear Malacologist,

On September 3, 2004, the eminent malacologist Dr. J.G.J. (Hans) Kuiper
will celebrate his 90th birthday. It is our intention to surprise him at
this occasion with a 'Liber Amicorum'. This will be done [during a meeting
on October 2, 2004] in cooperation with the Netherlands Malacological
Society and the Zoological Museum of the University of Amsterdam.
In 1934, the year in which the Society was founded, Kuiper became a member.
Later he was elected a Honorary Member, in addition he received the bronze
medal of the Society. The Queen of the Netherlands decorated him 'Knight in
the Order of Oranje Nassau'. Kuiper is 'Doctor honoris causa' of the
University of Amsterdam since 1984. In his professional career Kuiper was
in diplomatic service. For many years he worked at the Cultural Department
of the Dutch Embassy in Paris. After retirement in 1979 he preferred to
stay in France. Dr. Kuiper is worldwide known for his research on the
bivalve family Sphaeriidae, about which he published since 1942 numerous
publications in various scientific journals. For colleagues and museums all
over the world he identified Pisidium-specimens. Kuiper described new
genera and species and studied their geographical distribution. His vast
collection of half a million specimens and his very rich library were
donated to the Zoological Museum of the University of Amsterdam, of which
he is a honorary scientist. His collection of reprints was for the greater
part donated to the library of the Netherlands Malacological Society.

We invite you to write a personal letter for Hans Kuiper and to add your
picture, another photograph or drawing. Please return this before June 30,
2004, to:
Zoologisch Museum Amsterdam
Afdeling Malacologie
postbus 94766
1090 GT Amsterdam
The Netherlands

The results will be nicely bound together in alphabetical order of the
authors and presented to him during that special meeting of the Netherlands
Malacological Society.
In addition it is our intention to produce an issue of Basteria , dedicated
to Hans Kuiper, with scientific (or more popular) malacological
publications. Therefore you are also invited to write a short article about
a topic of your speciality. In manuscript about three to five pages of
A4-size, including the figures. These articles will be reviewed. Each
author will receive a copy of this volume. Please contact the occasional
editors [Coomans ([log in to unmask]), Moolenbeek
([log in to unmask]) or Van der Bijl ([log in to unmask])].
When returning your letter for the Liber Amicorum, please inform us if you
will also contribute to this volume. The manuscript (deadline August 31,
2004) should also be mailed to the Zoologisch Museum Amsterdam (see address
above).

Yours sincerely,

H.E. Coomans, R.G. Moolenbeek, A.N. van der Bijl
