I would like to second the use of FileMaker Pro for use in cataloging.
We are all limited by we can afford.  FileMaker Pro is worth every
penny.  Not only is it great for cataloging and sorting by any means
you choose but you can also generate labels for your collection or, if
you enter shows, labels to use for displays.

As Bob says, it is perfect for locating specimens by almost any
criteria you choose.  I am currently culling excess from our
collection.  This system has made this task easy and saved me a lot of
time.
