Hi, everyone!

This is, to say the least, a belated response to the short
thread concerning collectors of the 1970’s.  Reading
Paul’s e-mail brought back many pleasant memories of
collecting in the 1970’s.  At that time I bought and
traded a lot, and my non-Newfoundland collection really
expanded.  I also had some exchanges with Neil Russell, and
received a lot of really interesting British Columbia
species.  With reference to Paul’s list, here are a few of
those memories:

I remember buying some shells and dredged material from Art
and Emma West.  They supplied dried, uncleaned material from
shrimp boats out of Mazatlan.  I bought two ten-pound lots
from them and was rewarded with about 70+ species.  Mrs. G.
B. Robbins, in several exchanges, supplied me with some nice
Nova Scotia deepwater species.  I had several land and
freshwater exchanges with Gilbert Hubrecht, in Belgium.  He
liked to write in French so, as I could read French quite
well at that time, I wrote in my language and he wrote in
his.

I also corresponded with Dr. Bengt Hubendick, in Sweden
about his work on the Lymnaeidae, and later received some of
his publications.  I bought some nice West Coast shells from
Ormond McGill, and also had a couple of exchanges with Peter
Holm, in Iceland, in order to compare Icelandic species with
those from Newfoundland.  I enjoyed corresponding with
Richard Petit, after he purchased John Q. Burch’s
collection (Am I correct, Dick?) and I bought a lot of great
shells from him.

One final Memory Lane question:  How many of you out there
corresponded or traded with Robert R. Talmadge, in Northern
California?  We enjoyed many years of exchanging specimens
and information.

I hope that this long message will not bore you, but will
revive even more pleasant memories.
