Dear listers - especially Franck Frydman,

I have had this message, originally intended (off-list) for Franck Frydman
and for Bill Frank, returned for a dozen times over the last 24 hours or so.
This happens periodically with emails I try to send to France, the
Netherlands, or Belgium. I think my ISP has some kind of scunner on these
destinations. We can get this around the "authority" by posting to the List,
and maybe a few of us will find this of interest.

According to Petit and Harasewych (1990: 48), the work in which the
description of Oniscidia exquisita appears:

Adams, A. and L.A. Reeve, 1848-1850. Mollusca. pp. i-x, 1-87 + 24 plates. in
Adams, A. The zoology of the voyage of the H.M.S. "Samarang;" under the
command of Captain Sir Edward Belcher, C. B., F.R.A.S., F.G.S. during the
years 1843-1846. Reeve, Benham & Reeve, London.

was issued in three (or more) components. part 1: 1-24 November, 1848; part
2: 25-44 May, 1850; part 3: 45-87 August, 1850. They went on to write "exact
date of issue of plates not known."

Most authors use the 1850 date (including the latest monographic treatment,
the Iconography), but it never hurts to check; read on:

I have a copy of part 1 of Adams and Reeve. Inside the original wrappers, it
is comprised of a title page (recto); [i-ii], followed by pp. 1-24 and
plates 1 through 9 (uncaptioned). The [i-ii] contain the explanations for
the nine plates! Although the binding is very badly shaken, it appears that
this is the originally-composed fascicle. Since the text of the description
is in part two (p. 35; not part 3 as stated by Franck), that dates from May,
1850. However, the figure of this species, which makes it quite easily
recognized, is on plate 5 - right here in my November 1848 issue along with
the explanation. Dick Petit has concurred with my analysis.

Ergo Morum exquisitum (A. Adams and Reeve, 1848)

Harry

Petit, R. E. and M. G. Harasewych, 1990. Catalogue of the superfamily
Cancellaroidea Forbes and Hanley, 1851 (Gastropoda: Prosobranchia). The
Nautilus supplement1 (issued with vol,. 103): 1-69. March.
