Anothr point. Steve asked about shells donated to museum collections. In
an article in the Veliger, 1985 by Alan Solem, dealing with the
malacological collections in major US and Canadian museums, I believe he
stated that approximately 85% of the specimens in the collections came
from amateurs. I do not know how he derive this number but I put it out
there for comment. I will check the reference when I'm down at the museum
again. Does anyone know of a more recent reference that cites any
figures?
