Hi Sylvia,
 
When I do my chiton kill, I do it in a solution of alcohol and glycerin
(or is it an emulsion?) anyway it does a lovely job of preserving the
girdle with it's various features. After soaking in this solution for 2
to 3 days they remain fairly flexible and are much easier to clean the
critter out of, if this is your goal.
