There are clever progams known as "Utilities" - things like DiscDoctor,
Norton Utilities, etc. - not only can they detect many  problems in your
software and systems (and even boot-drives and directories!!), but they
can quite often fix them as well.  They can be a bit dangerous, unless
you make sure the version you are ttrying to use is compatibe with your
OS, as i found out a couple of weeks ago!!- so do not accept pirated
copies, and be careful in any case.  That said, a good, compatible
utility can work WONDERS for you, much of the time!! (and registered
versions are eligable  for frequent "viruses of the week (or month)"
updates.  I highly recommend these whiz-bang fix-em-up gadgets!!
