I found this snail shell in the flood bank of a pond near the DesPlaines
River in River Forest, IL near Thatcher and Washington.

Can you suggest what species it might be? Or point me to a web site where I
might be able to find it's classification?

    Thank you,

I have created a web page for it at:

     or

I have looked at snails from the following sites:

http://www.state.nd.us//ndgs/Ndn9.html
http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/natsci/malacology/fl-snail/snails2.htm

And I think it is one of the following species:
Snails Found in Cook County
Class Gastropoda - Freshwater Snails
  Subclass Prosobranchia
   Order Mesogastropoda
    Family Vivparidae

Campeloma crassulum Rafinesque, 1819 - Ponderous Campeloma
        Note: No picture found

Campeloma decisum (Say, 1816) - Pointed Campeloma

Lioplax sulculosa (Menke, 1827) - Furowed Lioplax

Note: Picture is a related species

Viviparus georgianus (Lea, 1834) - Banded Mysteryshell

Populations are highly variable, although each population tends to be
uniform in its characteristics.

Viviparus intertextus (Say, 1829) - Rotund Mysteryshell
