Thanks for clearing up this poorly understood historical incident for us.
Regrettably, the evil sand witch eventually triumphed, as today (I believe -
subject to correction) the family Donacidae (Coquina) no longer resides in
Hawaii.  The old hag must have got 'em all.
Incidentally, did those Leis purchased by Cook and company have anything to
do with the genus Leiochasmea, which does live there??
