POSTDOC POSITION IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES
The Institute of Soil Ecology of the GSF-National Research Center
for Environment and Health, Neuherberg near Munich, Germany,
is searching candidates for a position connected with a research
project in environmental sciences.
The project "Monitoring and Modelling of Water Flow, Crop
Growth and Solute Transport into Surface- and Groundwater" is
part of a research program on agro-ecosystems in an agricultural
landscape near Munich (Forschungsverbund Araroekosysteme
Muenchen).
Project aims are the development and application of a 3D water
flow and solute transport model to simulate vertical and horizontal
nitrate fluxes within a hilly landscape. Simulation results will
contribute to provide a data base for improved landuse
management by elaborating site specific fertilization schemes
(precision farming). The newly developed algorithms will be
implemented into an existing code for the simulation of terrestrial
ecosystems (soil, vegetation, atmosphere) which is written in C++.
The position is available since April 1999 and has a term of
three years.
The ideal candidate has a degree in soil science, applied physics or
applied mathematics/scientific computing. He/She should have
good knowledge of the computer language C or C++, should be
familiar with the use of ANSI-C compilers and have strong interest
in modelling variably saturated transport in porous media.
Knowledge of the German language is not expected and only
advantageous as far as everyday life is concerned.
Salary is according to the German BAT IIa tariff. It depends on
age and family status. (A 25 year old unmarried person receives
about DEM 66,000 / US$ 36,000 (gross payment per annum.)
Candidates which are interested in this position should contact me
as soon as possible, and provide their CV and a description of their
scientific background and interests.
