POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Title:                          ASSISTANT EXTENSION SCIENTIST

Position Open To:       MARCH 15, 2003

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This is a 12-month non-tenure track position
that will be 30% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station) and 70%
extension (Florida Cooperative Extension Service available in the
Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department, Institute of Food and
Agricultural Sciences, University of Florida.  This assignment may change in
accordance with the needs of the unit.  This position will be responsible
for implementing an extension/applied research program aimed at reducing
climate and weather risks in agriculture and natural resource management in
Florida and other Southeastern States.  He/she will conduct applied research
on climate variability impacts on agricultural and natural resources in this
region with an emphasis on development and implementation of decision aids
that are to be used by extension agents, farmers, and natural resource
managers to reduce risks associated with such variability.  This includes
responsibilities for implementing climate/weather related decision aids on
the Florida Automated Weather Network (FAWN) and linking with other
web-based climate and weather information products and sites.  He/she will
work with other Extension Specialists, natural resource managers, and
researchers in carrying out these responsibilities.  In addition, the person
in this position will coordinate information and activities among members of
the SE Climate Consortium, which currently includes researchers in Florida
and Georgia.  He/she will be responsible for holding workshops and focus
groups to determine priorities for decision aids and information products,
for informing clientele of the products, and for training users.
Implementation of the Affirmative Action program of the University of
Florida is required.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. in Agricultural and Biological Engineering,
Agricultural Operations Management, Agronomy or a closely related field is
required with training in weather/climate effects on agricultural systems
and in the use of crop models.  Experience in development of web-based
information systems is desirable.  Candidates should have demonstrated
skills in verbal and written communication, interpersonal relationships, and
an ability to work well with the public and with an interdisciplinary team
of researchers.  Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the
Land-Grant system.  Candidates must also have a commitment to IFAS= core
values of excellence, diversity, global involvement, and accountability

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Agricultural and Biological Engineering
Department has 32 faculty positions, 26 at the University location in
Gainesville and 6 at Agricultural Research and Education Centers around the
state.  The annual operating budget of the Department is between $5.5 and
6.0 million.   The University of Florida is a Land-Grant institution with an
enrollment in excess of 43,000 students on the Gainesville campus and a
member of the Association of American Universities. IFAS includes 20
academic units, 5 interdisciplinary centers, 14 research and educational
centers throughout the state, and Cooperative Extension units in each of
Florida's 67 counties and the Seminole Tribe. IFAS, one of the nations
largest agricultural and natural resources research and education
organizations, is administered by a Vice President and five deans: the Dean
of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the Dean for Extension,
the Dean for Research, the Dean for the College of Veterinary Medicine and
the Dean for the College of Natural Resources and Environment.
