Dear Phyllis,

You have asked some very basic questions; why?

The fundamental character of Longchaeus Mørch, 1875 (type Pyramidella punctata
Schubert and Wagner, 1829) is the channeled suture (also called a "peripheral
sulcus," the same thing. It is otherwise similar to the type genus of its
family (Pyramidellidae Gray, 1840), Pyramidella Lamarck, 1799 (type Trochus
dolabratus Linnaeus, 1758). The following passage (from a manuscript of mine)
will demonstrate some of the difficulties with species referable to Longchaeus:

683. Longchaeus crenulatus (Holmes, 1859) Crinkled Pyram [4] 12 mm.
Drift, 16th Avenue S., Jacksonville Beach. NB! 11/81. (NB).
Drift, 1.0 mi. N. Crescent Beach. HM! 1974. (HM).
Spoil, beach renourishment, Atlantic Beach. BH! 5/78. (BH).
Ex seastar (Astropecten articulatus), trawled, 30-60 ft., off Big Talbot
Is. WS!
1965-75. (HL).
Tuomey and Holmes (1848) indicated that the Miocene Pyramidella arenosa Conrad,
1843 occurs in the Recent. It is certainly close to L. crenulatus, as are
several other named fossil taxa. The similar L. candidus (Mørch, 1875) has a
thicker, shiny white shell and more-developed columellar lirae (when adult).
Abbott (1974) records it from NC to FL (probably based on Dall, 1889a), but his
figure (3461) is not of a Longchaeus species, and may be Pyramidella
subdolabrata Mørch, 1854 (no. 3460). L. candidus occurs in the Bahamas,
Honduras, Venezuela, and Brasil (HL) and is accurately illustrated in Warmke
and Abbott (1961; pl. 26, fig. d).
