"Philippine President to Sign Wildlife Protection Bill Into
Law

"MANILA, Feb 12 Asia Pulse - President Macapagal-Arroyo is
expected to sign into law shortly a landmark bill
establishing a bold national program that would protect and
conserve the country's wildlife resources.
This was disclosed by Sen. Loren Legarda, who expressed
confidence the measure would go a long way in promoting
ecological balance and biological diversity by preserving
wildlife resources.
This was disclosed by Sen. Loren Legarda, who expressed
confidence the measure would go a long way in promoting
ecological balance and biological diversity by preserving
wildlife species and their habitats.
The measure, co-authored by Legarda herself in the Senate,
mandates the Department of Environment and Natural Resources
to draw up a wildlife registry, establish critical habitats
outside protected areas, and to put up wildlife research
center.
Apart from banning the collection, trading, exploitation
and possession of wildlife and parts or by-products, Legarda
said the measure also provides for the creation of wildlife
monitoring units and rescue centers.
It likewise provides for the propagation of threatened
species and controls the use of native and exotic wildlife,
Legarda, chair of the bicameral Commission on Appointments'
environment and natural resources committee."

The phylogenetic scope of this plan is unclear, but it may be the headed
toward validating the unsubstantiated doomsday reports we saw on Conch-L a
couple years back.
