No, this is a South African Mermaid's comb and is definitely not molluscan. This is a perfect illustration why public names can be sooo confusing.

I do know that a Murex pecten is also called a mermaids comb, and it is also going to feature in my reply to the letter I recieved.

I believe a Mermaid's Comb is Murex pecten L. (1758).
