The Oregon Shell Club, each year, sets up a month long shell show at the
Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (Portland). The museum gives them
space, the show is juried. I've seen it twice and it is truly interesting.
As for volunteers in the museums, my "adopted mom", Liz Veal,
worked for the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History as a
microscopist for the malacology department for many years, until she died.
She was treated with great respect by the malacologists AND the management
and was an integral part of the "team". I think that it all has to do with
who's running the boat.

p.s. There is a nice museum display at LACMNH, worth stopping by and
seeing. It too was set up by the Pacific Shell Club and Conchological Club
of Southern California, the longest continuous shell club in America
(1902). Both clubs have now mergered to form the Pacific Conchological
Club (PCS)
