There's a new book "How to Read a North Carolina Beach: Bubble Holes,
Barking Sands, and Rippled Runnels" by Orrin H. Pilkey, Tracy Monegan Rice
and William J. Neal published by UNC Press. It's about $11.

It appears to be quite readable and well-illustrated. It does deal with
shells' influence on beach composition and how older shells get their color
as well as questions of the effects of "development" and dune buggy trails.
Plenty of detail on the mysterious patterns found in the sand you've
wondered about. Most of what's in the book probably applies to beaches
throughout the world.
