I do not know.  The thing looks like nothing I have ever seen, so I am just
passing on the information I received as is.  This was one of those
identification questions that needed more than a guy interested in nerites!

Holothurians are echinoderms (but not echinoids), so they should have
tube feet.  Perhaps they are there but not apparent.  Are they clearly
visible on the California species?
