ANNUAL AUCTION - OCTOBER 3, 1998
by Carol Brunner

The Greater Miami Shell Club will hold it's annual auction on Saturday,
October 3, 1998, at the North Miami Jaycee Hall (the same location as our
monthly meetings). Viewing will be at 6:00 p.m., with the auction starting
at
7:00 p.m. Bob Pace will be our auctioneer. As always, we will have a break
about half-way through the auction, and free refreshments will be available.
Please mark your calendars now and plan to join us. Without your support,
we
can't have a successful auction!

We have some great items this year - of special note is a Voluta (Lyria)
cloveriana, Cypraea hirasei, Cyp. vrendenburgi, Cyp. gaskoini, Cyp.
guttata-
not a gem, but good quality dead taken, also Pleurotomaria gemma (Slit
Shell)
- again found dead, but representative of the species, Harpa doris, Conus
bengalensis, a large Helmet shell, a coin set from the Seychelles Islands
featuring some fish and a shell, a 1999 Shell Desk Diary, a couple of Liguus
fasciatus (not sure of i.d. at this time) - as well as various Murex,
Olives,
Spondylus, Tritons, Tuns and Wentletraps. We also have a Beanie Baby -
"Peace" Bear (retired)!

We are trying to obtain donations from a couple of restaurants for free
dinners or 'buy one dinner, get one free' - which is always a popular
auction
item. If there are any merchants that any of you can approach for a
donation,
please do so. It will be greatly appreciated.

We have received donations from several members and several dealers, and
they
will be listed on the Auction List which will be ready for mailing with your
September issue of The Mollusk.

Bobbie & Stanley Phillips have donated a curio cabinet, but if finances
permit, we will also purchase either a Cowrie or a Cone for a second raffle
item.

Three big THANK YOU'S go out - to Bob Pace for obtaining several items from
Ed Paul from Len Hill's collection, to Mark Bethke for obtaining donations
from dealers over the Internet, and to Fay Mucha for obtaining donations
from
various dealers at the COA.

We are still in need of donations - shells, shell-related items, and, of
course, cash donations. As you know, the auction is our major fund raiser,
so
please help out the club in any way that you can. Thanks everyone.
