Hi Harry

Thanks for the info. I'll try and get the land mollusc ones, but I think
they'll be difficult to get. As an aside, are you Dr Harry Lee re the photo
of land snails collected in a Florida backyard that appears in R Tucker
Abbotts's book (page 27)?

Thanks

Alex

Dear Alex,

Here are some useful references:

Marine, freshwater, land:

Argonaut, Larchmont, NY. xvii + 1-142.

Marine:

Island, with descriptions of one new genus and two new species of
nudibranchs. 1-30 + 1 plate.
Long Island Shell Club, 1988. Seashells of Long Island, New York. Long
Island Shell Club, New York. 1-209.

Freshwater:

New York. Cornell Univ. Agr. Expt. Sta. Mem. no. 367: 1-79.
Strayer, D.L. 1988. Ecology and zoogeography of the freshwater mollusks
of the Hudson River basin. Malacological Review 20(1-2):1-68.

Landsnails:

Niagara Frontier region. Bulletin of the Buffalo Soc. Nat. Sci. 19(3): pp.
1-191 + i-xi + map. July.
Tim Pierce (Carnegie Museum) and Ken Hotopp (Appalachian Conservation
Biology, Frostburg, MD) are working on a monograph treating the landsnails
of New York State.
On May 11, 1963 I led a members of the New Jersey Shell Club to a point
near the NJ side of the Milford-Montague bridge over the Delaware River.
There we collected 27 shell-bearing species of land snails. That's pretty
good for the northeast. Locality and malacological details are provided in:
Lee, H. G., 1963. Land field trip May 11, 1963. The Jersey Sheller 1(1):
11-13. Jan.
As for destinations within three hours of NYC: A short story on collecting
in Ithaca, NY is at <http://www.jaxshells.org/hispida.htm>, southern VT at
<http://www.jaxshells.org/vermont.htm> and
<http://www.jaxshells.org/vermontnew.htm>.

I'm ignorant of any collecting regulations.

Harry
