Tom,
Do you have the land snail Monodenia fidelis callidina , Berry? I
just found some on Lost man Creek, northof Orick, California. They're
about 1 1/2 inches across and the rangers in Humboldt State park says that
they're the Redwood Snails. I found a few and can send you a couple of
specimens if you'd like.
As my wife doesn't have a lot of duplicate shells, except for S.
California, where we lived, it is difficult to give up specimens from her
collection. Carol wanted California shells, along with another person in
Italy, with whom I trade shells for fossils. We are really not prepared
for big trades. We got a mesage this morning, after I wrote a nice note
for Carol Brunner (I offered & she said yes)on the Conch-L list and I
received 2 requests, both of which were from people that had huge lists. I
really am not prepared for that size commitment...yet. We always collected
very consevatively and only took a few specimens of each species, so, at
this point, trading with people with huge lists has to take a back burner.
I'm not sure that I want to collect large quantities of any species as it
goes against what I teach my students in the classes I talk to. Yes, it is
a nice idea to have & share a nice collection with the public but I've not
yet justified, to myself, the act of wreckless collecting. No, I'm not an
anti-collector, nor an extreme conservative, just a little cautious about
what I do to nature.
I hope that I haven't sounded like the Nature Conservancy or any
other radical STOP THE KILL! group. let me know if you'd like to have a
couple specimens of the above species.
