Hello Ron, The answer is both [at least according to Coan, Scott and Bernard
"Bivalve Seashells of Western North America" (2000)]. They list this shell
as Venerupis (Ruditapes) philippinarum (A. Adams & Reeve, 1850). This
species is native to Japan, Korea and China. It arrived in B.C., Canada and
Washington State with Pacific oysters about 1900. It is now established in
California, Hawaii and the Mediterranean. I can attest to the latter since
I purchased some in a shellfish shop in Southern France in September. Bert

Subject: Venerupis or Ruditapes

Ron Noseworthy has been unable to post, recently, so he asked me to post
this for him:

Hi, everyone!

I've been updating some names in the Veneridae. I've come across
references to both Ruditapes philippinarum and Venerupis philippinarum. I
had thought that Venerupis was mainly an eastern Atlantic genus and
Ruditapes was mainly a western Pacific one, although some species have
been widely introduced. Are they the same? Also, can anyone enlighten me
on the origin and use of Venerupis and Ruditapes?

Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Malacologically yours,

Ron Noseworthy
