This articule and the other one "Chinese Hunger for Reef Fish Emptying Asian Seas"ought to scare the bejabbers out of everyone.  I especially
appreciated the comment, "We did two days of wild diving far from any
civilisation. Not a single fish was to be seen, not one," And when you combine that with population growth, well, there's just so
much more pressure on the ability of the earth to provide.  We used to
say in the '70s that these things would grow exponentially, and they
have.  If you can find figures on new house starts, house sales,
increases in prices for houses, that illustrates it, too.  People are
still working on the premise that short-term economic value is the
highest and best use of anything.  But if you could see how much land is
being taken out of cultivation, or where it was mostly unused before, is
now unavailable for agriculture, as in food growth...  Mankind is
selling its own future.
