John,
I too was on that trip as a guest of the club, and the interesting
thing was the respect which was shown for the company by the "fossilers"
and guides, that there was no possibility of anyone getting hurt and suing.
It might be that the company's geologist didn't get the report of what was
found there by the people involved. It was important for me to send a list
of the species that I found while fossiling there, as information is what
we're really after. Sometimes we collect and don't give back the
information that is necessary for scientific study. It would be
interesting to see if other "fossilers" have given their lists to Suncoast
and if Suncoast has given information to the University and the companies.
Yes, we were guests, but we also say that we are collecting for scientific
purposes.
Did some of the collectors give to the geologist from the
university, samples of what was collected so that there is a record of
species for the state's collection (of information). I gave samples to the
Los Angeles Museum of Natural History for their paleo collection as I
thought that it was important for them to have. We can't just collect to
collect. Yes, they are interesting objects to us, but they are information
about this country's pre historic past... and that's important to more
people than just a few of us.
If we want to continue to be "invited guests", we can't just take
without giving back.
