The answers to all your questions on slit shells can be found in
 
"The living Pleurotomaridae", by Patrick Anseeuw and Yoshihiro Goto, Elle
Scientific Publications, Osaka Japan, 1996. You can buy the book, which is
really worth it, at Mal de Mer for instance.
