I just happened to be reading a small book on Abalones (The Abalone Book
by Peter C Howorth) and he mentions that hollow tooth-shaped or
horn-shaped "pearls" may be formed around the gonad of an abalone.
Large crescent-shaped baroque "pearls" are formed under the columella
and small rounder pearls are from the gut.
