I use half mineral oil and half mineral spirits.  Mineral spirits are very
inexpensive and can be purchased at any paint store.  I don't know the
chemistry but imagine mineral spirits are basically the same as lighter
fluid.  Mineral spirits is a good medium and cheap replacement for
turpentine (which smells) and turpinoid (odorless, very expensive) for
artists who paint in oil.  I find this works well - the mineral spirits is
absorbed into the shell and the whole thing works much better than mineral
oil alone.
