POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE
CROP & SOIL MODELING/GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS
Background
Water has become one of the most critical natural resources in the State of
Georgia. The College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences of the
University of Georgia currently has several research programs to determine
agricultural water use. These programs involve an interdisciplinary team of
scientists in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences and the Department of
Biological and Agricultural Engineering, in close collaboration with J.W.
Jones Ecological Research Center and the Geologic Survey Branch of the
Department of Natural Resources. Data are currently being collected at more
than 400 sites on a monthly basis to determine how much water is being used by
individual irrigation systems. A post-doctoral research associate is needed
to help analyze this information and develop methodologies to determine water
use at a field level, a farm level, as well as at a regional level. These
methodologies will include statistical analysis techniques, geostatistics,
crop simulation modeling, and geographic information systems. The ultimate
goal is to be able to estimate agricultural water use at a watershed level as
well as at a regional level.
Requirements
A Ph.D. in Soil Science, Agronomy, Agrometeorology, Biological and
Agricultural Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or equivalent is
required. A strong background in modeling and geographic information system
is needed, as well as skills in statistical and geostatistical procedures.
Excellent computer and programming skills with personal computers and
workstations are expected. Good writing and presentation skills are
essential. Person must also be willing to travel by car to meet with the
interdisciplinary research team located at multiple locations, interact with
farmers, consultants, and government officials, and participate in local and
national meetings.
Availability
This position is available immediately; opportunities exist for a three year
duration. The University of Georgia provides excellent benefits for
post-doctoral research associates. Salary commensurate with training and
experience.
Location
The position will be housed in the National Environmentally Sound Production
Agriculture Laboratory on the Tifton Campus of the UGA College of Agricultural
and Environmental Sciences, Tifton, Georgia. The Campus is a research and
extension center with over 120 UGA and USDA scientists representing a dozen
disciplines. NESPAL is a state-of-the art laboratory and office facility;
