Dear Patty,

We collected in august three weeks in Baja California and didn't find the P.
mexicana. Local collectors told me there are none in Baja, but that the
species is relatively common around Acapulco but protected by the Mexican
gouvernement now. Occasionally we get specimen from old (thirty years and
over) collections in Europe that are dwelling around on shell shows. The
biggest I ever saw was 22 cm.
Keen wrote it is still very common there where the coast is difficult to
access. It is protected, not against shell collectors, but against locals
who consider it a delicacy, similar to abalone.

With best regards, Guido
