Actually, contrary to popular opinion the Endangered Species Act does work.
Several mollusk species are expected to be downlisted or delisted in the near
and not-so-near future due to the improved status of the species, among them
are Tulotoma magnifica (Coosa River of Alabama) and Potamilus inflatus
(Alabama population only - Louisiana population may represent an undescribed
species). Margaritifera hembeli (Louisiana) has been downlisted from
endangered to threatened. (Paul Hartfield - USFWS - Alabama Mollusk
Meeting, February, 1998, Spanish Fort, Alabama).
