Alex

We sold 6 specimens until today. The original locality is Rio de Janeiro City - which means it is
probably extinct....

I don't have these papers, except the latest book on Brazilian Land shells by Dr. Simone.

Regards

Marcus

Assunto: [CONCH-L] Megaspira ruschenbergiana Jay, 1836

Dear Listers
I recently bought a Megaspira ruschenbergiana Jay, 1836, in perfect condition, that had come from an
old collection. My understanding is that there are very few of these beasties in collections
anywhere, and that there are no recent records of extant specimens (and that no one really knows
what the habitat for the species is/are). There is very little info available on this species and in
his Compendium Abbott states: ‘Known only from old collections, perhaps by 30 specimens’. Salgado et
al. (Moluscos terrestres do Brasil (Gastrópodes operculados ou não, exclusive Veronicellidae,
Milacidae e Limacidae. Rev. Biol. Trop. 51 (Suppl. 3): 149-189, 2003) has: M. ruschenbergiana Jay,
1836 Jay, 1836: 81, n. num. pl. 1, fig. 2. Pilsbry, 1904: 182-184, pl. 28, figs. 1-4, in Tryon &
Pilsbry, 1903-1904). Does anyone have access to these works mentioned by Salgado et al. (maybe .pdf
of pages?). My other questions are: (1) how many land molluscs bods have a specimen of this beastie?
and, (2) does anyone have info on this species (or the genus: is there a monograph or review paper,
for example?) or knows where to get info? I think this is one of those ‘mystical’ species that you
necessarily handle with awe and great respect!
