That is interesting.  But I had it a little different.  Maybe not.

The way I saw it, the shell starts and looks like the smaller one.
I have some like that.   Then it starts to build an outer lip of sorts.
During a growth season - next year ? - it dissolves the outer lip off
and begins another curl.  Once 2/3 or more around the outer lip grows
back.

I say this since conchs have ridges on the outside where this 'new'
growth begins.

It sounded to me that only the adult has the fancy fluted lip at the
peak of life cycle.

Maybe I have it from there every year or two a new curl.

What is the story on this one ?


I'm thinking of a number of different species that seem to function
in the way I think.

Is it simply a small sample size and a jump to conclusion
or the background of this researcher ?  Or my thought process ?
