Actually the protoconch was still on the bench, but the entire
specimen was full of fractures and threatening to fall apart (I lose
quite a few fossil specimens from such material; sometimes I have to
consolidate them largely unprepared just to save them at all) and I
decided that rather than risk destroying the entire shell in the
attempt to reattach it, I'd leave it minus protoconch. Better an
incomplete specimen than none, and hopefully I'll find more.
