Linda and others,

Principia is in Elsah, north of Alton on the Illinois side and alma mater of
Conch-l participant Peggy Williams. I was looking for land shells there
this fall and did see any on my limited search. Curiously for you land
shellers there was an abundance of dead land shells in the beach drift of
the Mississippi River in that area as well as some very lightweight dead
juvenile naiads. I brought back a 5 gallon bag and am awaiting a cold day
here to sort through the drift.

Frieda Schilling at 86 is still with us, but health concerns has curtailed
her collecting days.

P.S.

There is a reference to Cepaea in "The Best of the Nautilus." Someone
planted a good deal of them at Principia College, which is somewhere in the
Greater St. Louis area - perhaps on the Illinois side.

But, Frieda Schilling and Hess Kemper (both deceased I think - Frieda excuse
me if you are still around) stated that they searched, probably in the 60's
or so, and they could find none.

Happy Left-over Turkey Days,
Linda
