Hi,
This is indeed Hydractinia, we also know it on our side of the Atlantic
where we call it Snail Fur. There are a lot of species known from the
Western Atlantic.
Concerning removal: only careful action with a dentist's pick works. I
haven't found a chemical agent yet which does the trick of removing the
Snail Fur without damaging the shell (affected (crabbed) whelks are very
common here in Holland).
Sincerely, Erick
