Hi Vicki, Do a Search for “Seattle Times Ocean Acidification” and you will find a really good 10 minute video on effects on oysters, coral, king crab and much more. There was also a several-day series by the Times. Great reporting. Happy retirement! Bert Bartleson, Olympia

Subject: [CONCH-L] Ocean Acidification and Mollusks

Hello All,
In my science classes we have been discussing acid rain, global warming and the consequences of carbon dioxide acidification of the world's oceans. I have read about the problems oyster farmers are having (in the Pacific northwest?) with the young oysters not developing normally. I know biological predictions are difficult if not impossible, but I was wondering if anyone had data or thoughts about how quickly ocean water imbalances could affect the growth of or extinction of snails and clams. Marine mollusks for the most part seem to have been withstanding the onslaught of human activity so far, but I'm wondering if we will see a catastrophic die off in the near future of the organisms all of us enjoy so much. Thank you for any thoughts on this subject.
