Scalptia crossei vs. Scalptia scalariformis
I have often been perplexed by the usage of these species names in shell books and now online. The same thick, strongly ribbed brown and white banded 30+ mm shells from the Philippines and elsewhere appear as two or even three 'species' online or in books.
Scalptia "crossei': The shell illustrated on Wikipedia e.g., under 'Scalptia crossei' also appears on Poppe's Conchology Inc sales and encyclopedia. pages as crossei, and the WoRMS image for crossei (NMR photo 90833), ditto for Eddie Hardy's gastropods.com.
And also on Eurasiashells.com as crossei (specimen from Olango) and so on and so on.
However in a number of places the same shell is referred to as Scalptia scalariformis. If you look at Kaicher's Cancellariidae cards (viewable on the Femorale website if you don't have the actual cards) she has this shell as scalariformis, and shows a different looking shell from Madagascar as crossei (ANSP 258030). Worldwide Conchology has a photo online of the same shell as scalariformis. There are a number of others as well on other sites. Allspira.com (dealer website) shows a shell as crossei that matches Kaichers, a smaller paler differenty sculptured shell than the one being discussed here from the Philippines.
AND to confuse things further, Wilson shows a different looking shell as scalariformis in Australian Marine Shells Vol 2 pl. 37 number 7; whereas the shell I am discussing here appears on the same plate as number 8, T. "scalarina".
Clearly someone(s) is right and someone(s) is wrong. I have been calling these shells scalariformis. I just got another from the Philippines out of an old collection with the label of a respected dealer as 'crossei', hence this posting.
Any experts out there?
