Carole,
The basic information that should be included would be where it was
collected, when, by whom, and ecological data- habitat, altitude, depth,
etc. One should also provide a statement to the prospective museum that
the specimen(s) were legally collected and are being donated without
restriction. Lastly, if permits were required, they or copies should
accompany the material.
This topic was covered quite well by Tim Pearce in a chapter in The
Mollusks: A Guide to Their Study, Collection, and Preservation edited by
Sturm, Pearce, and Valdes.
One other issue is to see if the museum feels that the material is
something that vthey would include in their collection. I have help to
accession at least two collections that were offered to other museums
before they came to The Carnegie. For example, a museum that only has a
collection of freshwater mollusks might not want a collection of marine
material.
