If this is the same incident, the NY Times is a bit slow

It seems unlikely that the fellow eating them had sufficient
malacological knowledge to identify the slugs, and by the time the
symptoms appeared, there probably wasn't much left of the slugs.
However, it's also true that journalists rarely know much about slugs, either.
