We seem to be missing the point with all this talk of vast databases of
generic and subgeneric definitions, which is that even if you had to hand a
record of all the criteria used to raise every genus and subgenus ever
proposed, you would still need to use your own initiative to place species
(apart from their type species) in them as you see fit. When it comes to
the question 'which genus does this species belong in?' you can copy what
other, apparently more learned, people say - which is what the majority of
us do, but that is not the same as doing the spadework yourself and thereby
gaining an understanding of the various groupings within a family.
