Dear David and other friends on Conch-L
yes, I know this was only a joke. As I bought yesterday the oratorium Joshua by Georg Friedrich
Händel. But the German translation from the text is not well done and doesn't agree with the
English or French text translation as to the bible.
Achsah is singing: Oh! had I Jubal's lyre
Or Miriam's tuneful voice.
In the French translation she is singing: Oh! si j'avais la lyre de Jubal
Ou la voix mélodieuse de Miriam
in German she will sing: Oh, hätt' ich Jubals Harf'
und Miriams Stimmgewalt
Stimmgewalt is not a good word for tuneful voice and really means loud-voiced.
This is what I wanted to ask Händel, if he were still alive.
Are you interested in music and in which kind of it. What do you feel about this German translation. For me it is not
good. My mother, Dr. Irmgard Nisters, aged nearly 89 years, knows another translation:
Oh, hätt' ich Jubals Harf'
und Miriams süßen Ton
This as my explanation to you
with best shelling regards
Helmut from Innsbruck
Dear David and other friends on conch-l
It's not so in the bible. This was my error. But my mother sung it about 50 years ago. She likes religious music. She told
me that the German translation here is not good, but the French on excellent.
tunder is another thing as Stimmgewalt.
again with best wishes
Helmut

>I would need the e-mail of Georg Friedrich Händel to ask him about Joshua.
You would need a seance rather than email if you are referring to the
composer.
