Hi David,

I'm not a bubble-head, but...

Curious about why Abbott did not use the name Hydataina physis, I looked up
the listing for Hydatina vesicaria in Abbott (1974) to see exactly what was
written.

I found the listing on page 314. After the description for H. vescaria,
Abbott says: "Formerly called H. physis Linne which, however, is believed to
be limited to the Indo-Pacific. Synonym: H. verrilli Pilsbry, 1949 (The
Nautilus, vol. 63, p. 15)."

Then, I wondered if there might be information in the description of H.
verrilli. I recalled Dr. Leal mentioning that 'The Nautilus' is now
on-line, so I searched for it with google and found it (again).

The Nautilus is online in the Biodiversity Heritage Library at:
http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/bibliography/6170

Volume 63 is at the following url:
http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/34872

The navigation panel on the left lets you select page 15. The second page
of the description (p. 16) contains a discussion that explains why Dr. Paul
Bartsch separated H. vesicaria from H. physis. This is probably the
reasoning Abbott considered in deciding to replace H. physis with the name
H. vesicaria.

I attempted to find the article by Paul Bartsch referenced on-line since I
do not have the journal (execpt for a few issues with cone descriptions)
myself, but was not successful in finding the correct volume on the
internet. Several early volumes (up to Vol. 28?) are digitized on the
Biodiversity Heritage Library and there is at least one subscription site
that has recent issues, but not volume 53.

Perhaps someone else with access to the Bartsch reference will add to the
discussion thread.

Regards,

Bill Fenzan

Norfolk, Virgina
